Job Description Summary

Webster University is seeking a part-time graduate academic advisor. The graduate advising team provides high quality academic advising to graduate students in both online and in person. Advisors help students navigate the graduate school experience by serving as a consistent resource during their academic journey. Advisors are expected to understand, communicate, and articulate academic policies and procedures to students. Proactive approaches and strategies focused on retention are imperative to the advising practice. Graduate advisors may advise on any program, though also serve on school specific advising teams. Graduate advisors also serve as a resource for extended site campus advisors.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, secondary education, counseling, psychology, or other related field

Availability to work the following hours:
• Mondays 12:00 – 4:30 p.m.
• Wednesdays or Thursdays 12:00 – 4:30 p.m.
• Fridays 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
• Some additional weekends and evenings required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in advising, counseling, or related field, preferably in higher education
• Strong interpersonal communication skills
• Comfort using and learning evolving technologies
• Familiarity with using a student information system
• Expertise in reading and interpreting academic policy
• Understanding of student development theory and approaches to conflict resolution

Physical Demands
Essential Duties

• Provide academic advising to graduate students at Webster University, both online and in person
• Focus specifically on caseload of online and international graduate students
• Understand, communicate, and articulate academic policies and procedures to students and colleagues
• Engage in retention initiatives for graduate students
• Implement effective online advising approach with online students
• Empower students to take academic responsibility for their academic career
• Provide training and serve as a resource for colleagues across the global Webster University network
• Contribute to the advising team by serving on both office and university committees
• Effectively manage high volume of student inquiries, emails, and phone calls
• Maintain evolving student caseload
• Complete detailed plans of study and provide follow up for each student
• Provide intentional outreach with assigned advisees, focusing on intake, retention, and graduation
• Willingness to work on a team
