Job Description Summary

Incumbent is responsible for the coordination and supervision of field experiences for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate candidates seeking initial and advanced certification; collaboration with school and community partners; supervision of teacher candidates in diverse school settings; organization, orientation, and supervision of university supervisors in the field. Reports to the Dean of the School of Education.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree and at least 5 years teaching experience in a public or private PK-12 setting

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral degree and at least 5 years teaching experience in a public or private PK-12 setting; preferred experience in a St. Louis area school district.

Some administrative experience in a PK-12 setting preferred.

Physical Demands

Essential Duties

Professional Relationships
• Supervise work of Coordinator of Field Placements
• Oversee field supervisors
o Review evaluations from students and cooperating teachers; problem-solve as needed
o Find, interview, supervise, and hire/terminate new supervisors as needed
o Plan and host two group meetings (one per semester) for all supervisors to discuss issues and procedures
o Evaluate supervisors for continued employment
o Select mentors for new supervisors
o Act as resource and university liaison for supervisors and cooperating teachers
• Work with certification officer to insure consistency and accuracy of information on candidates
• Works in collaboration with faculty and program leaders to establish best practices in field experiences
• Maintain necessary files for accreditation reporting for Office of Assessment and Dean
• Write annual reports pertaining to practicum and apprentice teaching
• Communicate and work with teaching faculty to insure consistency and continuity in programs with the classroom work being done by students
Student Relationships
• Oversight of students in field placements in both practicum and apprentice teaching
• Troubleshoot issues that arise with practicum and AT students and placements
• Work with supervisors and cooperating teachers to support and evaluate students
• Design, oversee, and evaluate remediation process for students in field placements
• Travel to schools for conferences with students, cooperating teachers/schools, and/or supervisors as needed to resolve student issues in the field placement
Plan and conduct orientations for students entering field placements
• Apprentice Teaching: fall and spring
• Practicum: fall and spring
Organize, coordinate, oversee, and evaluate AT seminar instructors and program
• Set yearly calendar and arrange rooms
• Plan opening and closing meetings and arrange rooms
• Recommend seminar instructors and provide in-service meeting once per semester
• Troubleshoot issues with MoPTA and seminar for students and faculty participants
• Use ETS website and MoPTA resources to update seminar information
Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with local PK-12 Schools
• Interact with local schools and districts to develop existing relationship and understanding of changing needs in schools for successful placements of students in field experiences
• Consult with schools and districts as appropriate to improve relationships with the university and to enhance working opportunities for students
• Actively seek new school partnerships for placements
Evaluation of field experience program and personnel
• Travel to schools to evaluate supervisors during candidate observations
• Evaluate schools for placements
• Evaluate cooperating teachers for placements
• Insure student evaluations take place each semester and are sent to the Office of Assessment
• Visit schools
Review and revise Practicum Handbook, AT Handbook, and MOPTA on an annual basis
Professional Development
• Attend state and national conferences on teacher education and on issues in education;
• Keep current with issues in the field of teacher preparation and evaluation through reading, webinars, and other professional development opportunities
