Job Description Summary

The Department of Dance is seeking a dance-artist and educator with extensive professional performance and/or choreographic experience to start Spring or Fall 2018.

Webster University’s Department of Dance in The Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts educates students to become skilled, creative, and compassionate thinking artists for 21st century careers as performers, choreographers, educators, and scholars. We promote the uniqueness and wholeness of the individual artist by sustaining a personalized approach through direct relationships with faculty and staff, and attention to student life. We challenge students to strive for depth of expertise in their discipline by joining theory and practice, encouraging rigor in creativity and scholarship, and fostering a lifelong desire to learn. We engage students as performers, choreographers, and teachers to be inclusive and compassionate by instilling a culture of respect for diversity and understanding of their own and others’ values. We embrace dance as an art form within a global community by educating a diverse population with an international perspective that acts responsibly and consciously toward social and environmental issues, strengthening the communities we serve. The Department of Dance has approximately 36 dance majors and offers both a BFA and BA in Dance, as well as a Minor in Dance. The Department of Dance participates regularly in the American College Dance Association conferences. There are two theatres, two primary studios, three full time faculty and approximately 16 adjunct faculty. A Director of Musicians for Dance and a dance medicine doctor are also in residence. The program offers all levels of Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, and Choreography, with the focus of graduating dancers who are well versed in all techniques and capable performers, choreographers, and teachers. Students emphasize either in ballet or modern in their major, yet graduate as versatile contemporary dancers.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates should have a Master’s degree, a strong background in ballet and modern dance, and 3 years experience teaching at the University level. Exceptional candidates could substitute performance experience and will be evaluated on an individual basis. This is a tenure-track position.

Preferred Qualifications

It is preferred the candidate has an MFA degree in dance. Preference will be given to candidates who have interests in developing community outreach and engaging social issues in the arts.

Physical Demands
Essential Duties

It is anticipated the candidate will have the ability to teach all levels of ballet and modern technique classes, choreograph for the Webster University Dance Ensemble, direct outreach programs for the Department of Dance, advise students, and assist in recruitment. Knowledge in any of the following fields is considered an asset: Repertory, Performance Techniques, Horton Technique, Composition, and Dance History.
