Job Description Summary

Based at our First Floor Service Desk during weekends and occasional late nights, this employee uses strong interpersonal communication and problem solving skills to collaborate with other Access Services and Reference Desk staff when providing friendly and professional service to our users. Closely follows a routine set of procedures in order to thoroughly prepare the library for opening or closing. Reports to the Head of Access Services.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of college coursework.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors’ degree preferred.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs and spend long periods of time stitting or standing

Essential Duties

1. Becomes a proficient user of the Library’s LIS (library information system) in order to help our patrons locate materials, request materials, and check out materials. Uses this same system to check in library materials, process materials which are damaged and need repair, and to create and update patron records as necessary.
2. Inspects returned books, materials, and equipment for damage.
3. Helps prepare returned items for shelving as necessary.
4. Works at the first floor service desk at scheduled intervals and rotates coverage of the first floor service desk with other Access Services staff.
5. Supervises up to three Access Services student employee per shift.
6. Follows established procedures when opening and closing the library.
7. Answers phone calls. If unable to answer the question, either takes messages or transfers calls as appropriate.
8. Answers directional questions and basic questions about finding specific items in our collections but refers reference and informational questions on the use of library materials and questions to the reference librarians.
9. Replaces paper and toner in both public and staff printers as necessary and follows established procedures for requesting new supplies of paper and toner.
10. Works with Reference Desk staff and Access Student workers to troubleshoot and resolve patron’s problems with technology in the library. Follows standard procedures for reporting those problems to Webster IT and the library staff when unable to resolve the problems.
11. Monitors the daily Library Conference Room event schedule in order to ensure that the Library Conference Room is setup for the next scheduled event.
12. Shelves materials, shelf reads, and helps conduct inventories. Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs and spend long periods of time sitting or standing.
